The Curious Case of Garvin Kendrick: A Modern Harper Thorne Adventure

Based on the short story The Sphinx by Edgar Allan Poe.

This is how the Curious Case of Garvin Kendrick episode came about. We received communication from a listener who enjoyed the Druthers adventures and asked if we would record some versions of Edgar Allan Poe stories. She recommended a few potential short stories and among them was the Sphinx. After reading the Sphinx I felt the story held promise for a Druthers adaptation but the original story was short, it had two characters and most of it was narration and the actual cause of the misunderstanding, a mistake on perspective, could work only if there were other variables that could be other explanations for the creature or Garvin’s reaction to it. So I introduced the Kendrik family, the idea of Garvin drinking something, especially absinthe, the idea his brother was doing experiments in his profession that related to cognition all to give some possible explanation for the story. I also ensured this was a solo Harper Thorne story, for I felt that if both Harper and Barnaby were there, the story would be over too quickly because the two working together would identify the solution.  This was a unique story, and we normally don’t do story requests, but we were happy this particular story came together as it did and we hope our listener Ariane and the rest of our listeners enjoyed it.
