A Brief History of Barnaby Druthers Part II

It was readily apparent that the Barnaby Druthers concept was a rich wellspring from which the creative spirit could drink.

Irene Adler as the actual intellectual force of the new investigating duo was a character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle for A Scandal in Bohemia. Every incarnation of Sherlock Holmes in various forms of media that I can think of have found the Irene Adler concept compelling, but always as a side character to Sherlock, because after all, those stories were SHERLOCK stories. Although the series we’re creating here is Barnaby Druthers, it is the Irene Adler character that takes center stage. A character like Irene Adler as we find her is inclined to shun the spotlight but still quests for her own forms of justice which makes Barnaby the essential tool from which she can do her work.

Because Irene Adler was already an established character, it was important to tell her story as we knew it from Doyle and so the next episode had to be A Scandal in Bohemia. Now at the end of Scandal in Bohemia (and I should note this is a spoiler warning, although granted it’s been more than 100 years, so you’ve had time to read it, but if you haven’t and if you haven’t heard our story yet, feel free to stop and listen to it or better still, read the original short story in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, by Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle. There…all better, now to continue)…at the end of Scandal in Bohemia, Irene Adler succeeds in foiling Sherlock Holmes’ investigation and flees London with her new husband Geoffrey Norton.

The Irene Adler we meet in Barnaby is still calling herself Irene Adler and is decidedly not with Geoffrey Norton. We do not know the reason why but later stories will explore that history.

Dan Willey and Jeff Savage portray Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson for Nutmeg Junction and so they performed the second episode involving Barnaby Druthers-A Scandal in Bohemia, and then performed another Sherlock adventure: The Disappearance of Lady Carfax. We enjoyed Willey’s and Savage’s turn as Holmes and Watson so much that in 2021, a dedicated team under the direction of Deborah Goodman is creating a 6 episode Sherlock Holmes series for Junction. Undoubtedly, links will find there way here.

Once the introductions of Barnaby (in the first episode “Introducing Barnaby Druthers” and Irene (A Scandal in Bohemia) was made, it was time to start episodic adventures. And that’s what we will discuss in the next blogpost.
